Philosophy
Sunnyside Kindergarten will equip children with a life-long love of learning, a positive attitude towards new discoveries, and a willingness to take risks. We encourage all children to play, interact, and investigate through a variety of developmentally appropriate activities that provide the practice of new skills in multiple ways.
Curriculum Statement
An emergent and thematic based curriculum will engage children in learning skills through a variety of methods while addressing and exceeding district and state standards. Meaningful connections and multi-sensory experiences will occur in whole group, small group, one-on-one, and individual learning centers. The solid skills in reading, writing, and math will be taught with a variety of tools and materials to meet the needs and levels of each learner.
Assessment Overview
Sunnyside Kindergarten will provide each student with an Individual Learning Portfolio. The Individual Learning Portfolio will consist of a collection of formal and informal assessments. A child's progress will be documented through writing samples, drawings, homework and class participation, reading level assessments, self-evaluations, developmental checklists, and pictures of the child at work. Assessment is an integral part of a child's portfolio and it communicates a child's growth in learning to the family and teacher. Data from quarterly conferences, narrative report cards, and frequent overviews of the individual learning profile will show a child's progress in mastering curriculum standards.
Parent Involvement
Kindergarten is a wonderful opportunity to begin a partnership between teacher and family. It takes a community to teach a child and Sunnyside Kindergarten welcomes parents who are able to participate in their child's learning environment. Children are excited and proud of their parents and enjoy sharing their learning with them! Throughout the year a wide range of opportunities will arise for parent involvement and we encourage parents to find an opportunity that appeals to them.
