Ms. Katie received her teaching certificate in Elementary Education through Central Washington University and received her Bachelors Degree from Western Washington University. Katie’s many diverse teaching experiences combined with extensive education and a passion for teaching and learning prepares her to be a noteworthy teacher, mentor and advocate for children.
Katie's experience includes instructing students in grades 2-5 in reading through the America Reads program, student teaching in a first second grade split class, K-6 instruction in math and reading through the Title 1 and Special Education program utilizing Read Well, Read Naturally, and Corrective Reading programs.
While with AmeriCorps NCCC in 2001, Katie worked for nearly a year with the 21st Century Learning Program in Lacombe, LA as a lead teacher for 15 kindergarteners in an after school program. She also tutored middle school students for an end of the year grade level assessment and worked in their special education classroom with preschool and kindergarten students with special needs.
Other experience includes creating curriculum for literacy based summer camps, being a lead teacher in after school programs, substituting in the public school system, teaching early literacy and WASL prep, working in a Head Start program, volunteering, and coaching gymnastics. She has had much training that includes math seminars put on by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), Love and Logic training, as well as many early literacy seminars.
Katie's volunteer work includes two years at Camp McLeod Girl Scout camp in Belfair, Washington, six years as the Youth Group Activity Leader at her church and the past twelve years as an Elementary Education Tutor at President's Elementary in Arlington. Katie has grown up in education; both of her parents are educators, her mother has taught first grade and Kindergarten for the past 20 years and her father Special Education for the past 33 years. She has a twin sister who is also a kindergarten teacher in the Edmonds school district.
